Add it to the second equation: (2x - 2y) + (x + 2y) = 16 + 4 3x = 20 x = 20/3
To find y, simply plug the x=20/3 into any of the equations and then solve for y to get y = -4/3

Subtract the equations.
x-y=8 x+2y=4
-3y = 4
y = -4/3
Substitute to find x.
x - y = 8 x + 4/3 = 8
x = 20/3

x-y = 8 x = 8 +y plug into second equ. (8+y) +2y =4 8+3y =4 3y = -4 y = -4/3 plug into first equ. x- (-4/3) =8 x+(4/3) = 8 x = 8- (4/3) x = (24/3) - (4/3) x = 20/3

What they did was to set first equation to solve for x,
x = y+8
Then they put that into the the first equation equal to y
y+8+2y = 4 y = -4/3
Then they put this into the second equation to solve for x
